Apply for a Home
Are you in need of better housing?
Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island is dedicated to the elimination of
inadequate housing by building homes in partnership with families
in need. Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island does not discriminate according to
race, religion or ethnic group.
Homeowner families are chosen based on three criteria:
- Need for Affordable Housing
Families must demonstrate that they are in need of a decent,
affordable house. Need for affordable housing is defined by
a family income
that is within the
appropriate "low income cut-off" (poverty line) defined by Statistics
Canada and existing living conditions that are inadequate in terms of structure,
cost, safety or size. The ratio of shelter expense to total income is also
factored.
- Ability to Repay
Families must have the ability to repay a no-profit, no-interest
mortgage loan. A Habitat Mortgage requires that the family
has a stable income sufficient
to cover the monthly mortgage payments and other expenses that come with
home
ownership.
- Willingness to Help
Families must demonstrate a willingness to partner with Habitat
by contributing 500 hours of volunteer labor "sweat
equity" which
is volunteer labour done on our build sites. Our families are
able to participate in the building
of their own homes, and the homes of other families. Families must also
adhere to all policies and procedures set out by Habitat for
Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island.
If you think you qualify based on all three criteria, contact
the Habitat office by phone 250-758-8078 or e-mail us at info@habitatmvi.org.
We will tell you about the next information session. After attending
an information session, you may choose to apply to become a Partner
Family.
